Picture this, you're in the hospital finally getting ready to meet your new baby. You've been waiting 40 long weeks for this moment. You've been dreaming about this day since you first found out you were expecting.

Nothing can ruin these special moments like realizing you don't have all the newborn essentials you need. Don't get anxious, we've created a complete checklist of newborn essentials to help make sure you're on track.

Let's start with some of the more common essentials that you'll need every day.

Everyday Newborn Essentials

This group of essentials you will need for your child nearly every day. Many of these products may seem obvious. But they are very easy to overlook when you're already thinking about a million and one other things you need.

Feeding Supplies

If you plan on breastfeeding you need a breast pump. There are many different styles and price ranges.

You will also need milk storage bags to store your pumped milk. About six bottles with newborn sized nipples should work, to begin with. Bottle drop-ins can help simulate breastfeeding better than just using a bottle, helping to reduce gas.

Safe Sleeping Area

If you're expecting a new baby get used to hearing the ABCs of sleep. Alone on their back in a crib. Of course, you can use a bassinet as well if you'd like.

Also, be sure that the mattress you use is firm to give your baby all the support they need. You'll also need tight-fitting sheets that won't slip off while your baby is sleeping.

Bath Supplies

Bath time for newborns consists of a sponge bath as they get dirty. However, this will only be until their umbilical cords dry up and fall off. After that, there are a few things you'll need.

A baby tub, with a mesh newborn sling, can be a lifesaver at bath time. These tubs allow the baby to feel the water and enjoy their bath. But it also keeps them safe and above the water.

Of course, you'll need stuff like shampoo, body wash, and lotion. Baby washcloths are softer than normal washcloths and loofas and are better for baby sensitive skin. You may also want to look into getting a hooded towel to make drying off a breeze.

Diapering

A good start on diapers will help a lot, especially if you're planning on using disposable diapers. You'll want to get one or two newborn size packages (they won't stay in them for long). If you're planning on using washable diapers start with 8-10.

Baby wipes are also essential, unscented wipes may be better because the baby's skin may be irritated by perfumes. You'll also need baby powder, to help keep your baby dry and prevent diaper rash. Also, keep diaper rash cream handy for times when diaper rash does pop up.

Clothes

You may not even have to buy these. Most people go nuts when buying clothes for babies. But be sure you have adequate clothing for the season.

If your baby is due in colder months, be sure you have long-sleeve onesies, footed pants, and a warm hat. Layers are also needed to help keep your baby warm.

If you're having a baby during the warmer months be sure you have sun hats. This can help keep the sun from burning your baby's delicate skin.

Newborn Essentials at the Hospital

There are a few things you'll need for your baby while you are at the hospital. These are special items for keepsakes, memories, celebration, and safety.

Let's start with the most important item, the car seat.

Car Seat

The car seat will be required before you can bring your baby home from the hospital. There are many to choose from.

Rear-facing infant seats are usually small and have carrying handles. Convertible seats can be used as rear-facing and forward-facing seats. All in one seats can be rear-facing, forward-facing, and belt-positioning boosters.

Having a baby mirror mounted on the headrest in front of your baby can allow you to look at your baby during the ride. This can entertain your baby and give you peace of mind.

Photo Props

If you plan on doing a baby photoshoot after they are born you'll want to have some props or outfits. Be sure to pack these in your hospital bag.

These can be anything you'd like, this is your baby's special day get creative.

Blankets

Hospitals can get really cold. If you have blankets handy you can keep baby warm while you're trying to flag down your busy nurse to turn up the air.

Extra blankets can be used to clean up unexpected messes in a pinch as well. They can also be used as a cover for breastfeeding if you're not comfortable in front of others.

Other Things to Think About

Some of these next items are vital but don't really fit into the categories above. Some can really help save a new mother's sanity. But they all deserve a spot in this article.

Medicine

While it's true there shouldn't be many instances where you'll need medicine. Keep some on hand just in case.

Gas drops and gripe water can be a mother's holy grail at times. These medications are safe at any age when used appropriately. Always consult your doctor before administering any other medications to your baby.

Teething Toys

Babies like to chew long before they start teething. Teethers can have many different textures, and some can be frozen. These work great for infants that like to chew on the nipples of bottles but not eat.

Diaper Bag

A diaper bag is essential for traveling with a baby. These bags make it easier to organize diapers, wipes, bottles, extra milk or formula, extra clothes, etc. It can even help carry mom's stuff too.
