Minimizing Pain and Other Factors during Wound Care

Aaron Alfson |

Whether a persistent wound such as a pressure sore or a healing wound such as a surgical incision, wound care is tedious on the caregiver and uncomfortable for the patient. With so many products on the market for keeping wounds clean, it can be difficult to choose which would be best for your situation.

Some wound dressings are designed to be used on all types of wounds, and this is definitely the case for Mepilex border dressings. They're often used for post-operation wounds, but are also effective on leg and foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, skin tears, blisters, abrasions, and more.

The Benefits of Mepilex Border
The discomfort that comes with dressing wounds is often the result of the dressing sticking to the wound bed. Mepilex border is designed to do the opposite – wit adheres gently to the skin around the wound, but does not irritate the wound bed itself. Any wound that requires a thin self-adherent dressing can be treated with Mepilex.

Due to the nature of these dressings, pain and trauma is minimized during dressing changes. It's also beneficial because it's self-adherent and doesn't require any secondary dressings. It protects against moisture and bacteria, making it safe for showering and use under compression bandages if necessary. The material used in these dressings is flexible rather than stiff, making movement more comfortable than other dressings. It can also be lifted and re-applied without using its adherent properties.

How it Works
Mepilex uses Safetac®, a soft silicone adhesive technology that is designed to avoid trauma and pain when the dressing is removed. It is also designed to absorb wound exudate while maintaining a moist wound environment, thus promoting rapid healing. However, the margins of the wounds are sealed so that the wound does not soften.

How to Use It
When dressing a wound with Mepilex border, it's important to start with clean, dry skin on and around the affected area. Use a wound pad that is significantly larger than the wound itself in order to overlap its borders. Apply the dressing to the wound without stretching the material. It can be changed once every several days.

Because of Mepilex border, patients with large wounds can enjoy relatively painless wound care. No more fear of "ripping off the band-aid" and a quicker healing time make for a more comfortable recovery process, whether you're dealing with pressure sores or a surgical recovery.
